Unrest is coming to Vancouver this May!
As part of our May 12 Awareness events, the ME|FM Society of BC is sponsoring two screenings of Unrest at the DOXA Documentary Film Festival (May 4-14, 2017) in Vancouver, BC.
From its 2013 Kickstarter through to its 2017 debut at the Sundance Film Festival, ME patient Jen Brea’s award winning documentary Unrest has been highly anticipated by members of the ME community. This May, we’ll finally get a chance to see and hear our story, as told through Brea’s lens, when it screens at this year’s DOXA Documentary Film Festival. The ME|FM Society of BC is proud to be sponsoring the May 12th & 13th screenings as a way to raise awareness of ME and the work the Society does to help patients.
Unrest tells the story of Jennifer, a Harvard PhD student. One day she was signing a check at a restaurant when she found she could not write her own name. Months before her wedding, she became progressively more ill, losing the ability even to sit in a wheelchair. When doctors told her it was “all in her head,” she turned her camera on herself and her community, a hidden world of millions confined to their homes and bedrooms by ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis), commonly called chronic fatigue syndrome.
Praise for Unrest
“A film that is both charged with urgency and slowed down to the speed of a disease that freezes lives in place while the world seems to pass by.” –Triad City Beat
“A revelation and a call to action” – Salt Lake City Tribune
We hope to use our presence at the screenings, and the screenings themselves, to help raise audience and public awareness of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis in Canada and in BC in particular. That these screenings coincide with ME & FM International Day of Awareness allows us to underline the scope, scale, and urgency of ME globally. Our sponsorship also allows us to offer some great rewards (festival passes & tickets) to donors, so keep an eye out for our upcoming fundraising campaign!
Help us make these screenings a sell out! Not only do we hope to get a great turnout from our community, we also urge you to spread the word to all the thoughtful and curious people you know who might be open or interested in learning something new. Please share this announcement widely through your networks!
