Celebrating Strength on International Women’s Day: Navigating ME and Menopause with Compassion

Today, as we honor the resilience and achievements of women worldwide, we want to shine a light on a community that embodies unwavering strength: women living with ME/CFS.

Did you know that women make up roughly 80% of ME cases?

This International Women’s Day, we’re tackling the intersection of ME and menopause—a journey many face with courage but far too little support.

Menopause + ME: A Dual Challenge

Menopause is a natural transition, but for women with ME, hormonal shifts can intensify symptoms like:

  • Crushing fatigue that feels heavier than ever

  • Worsened pain sensitivity (common in ME and fibromyalgia)

  • Sleep disruptions that deepen PEM (post-exertional malaise)

  • Mental fog compounded by hormonal fluctuations

You’re not imagining it—and you’re not alone.

Dispelling Myths: Separating Fact from Fiction

Let’s challenge harmful misconceptions that silence women’s experiences:

MYTH: “Menopause ends ME symptoms—just push through!”

FACT: Menopause doesn’t “cure” ME. Hormonal changes often worsen symptoms. Rest isn’t laziness—it’s essential preservation.

MYTH: “ME symptoms during menopause are just ‘part of aging.’"

FACT: ME is a distinct neurological illness, not a normal part of aging. Overlapping symptoms require tailored care, not dismissal.

Empowering Strategies for Navigating Both Worlds

Respect Your Energy Envelope

Your limits might shift—honor them. Prioritize rest without guilt. "Doing less today can mean preserving strength for tomorrow.”

Cooling Comfort for Hot Flashes

Keep cooling towels, layered clothing, and a bedside fan handy to manage temperature swings without overexertion.

Community & Connection

Join our ME|FM Society of BC support groups to share stories and strategies with others walking this path.

You Are Seen. You Are Heard.

To every woman balancing ME and menopause: Your strength is extraordinary.

Today, we celebrate you—and we commit to advocating for better research, compassionate care, and a world that believes your story.

Share your experiences or tips below. Together, we rise.
